I was so proud of your question and the fact that you are comparing republican scandal to republican scandal. Of course, some poop brain had to muck it all up with the monica thing.

Obviously, watergate left a darker stain on the american consciousness (look at the fact that every scandal is now named "something-gate"), but Iran contra was very bad no question.

The main difference (and the reason that Watergate could be worse) is that Watergate related directly to an election and so it compromised our most basic concept of democracy. Not that it affected the outcome of the election but the effect was chilling nonetheless.

Iran contra was more like an abuse of presidential power and misleading the american populace. Unfortunately, Iran contra left marks in other countries besides the US so in that sense, it was worse.

Great question.

Watergate, because we actually knew what happened, and who was responsible. Iran-Contra is still a big unknown, and nobody gives a rip 20 years later about Iran having some outdated weapons, and some Nicaraguans getting the money from the sale.
