Well - I was in the same predicament for a few people. I hate giving cash and feel bad for doing it. I think that its a thoughtless gift. Meaning I didn't want to put much thought into what I was getting a person. I hate feeling that way but what happens when you don't really know the person any more or they live far away and it has to be mailed anyway? So, what I did instead of giving cash (cash is more easily spent here and there - with nothing left to show for it) - I found at my local grocery store Mastercards and American Express Cards with a specific amount and bought them. Some were mailed out. Others were wrapped in a huge box stuffed full of plastic grocery store bags...made a little more fun - they had to dig for the gift card. Hope this helps.

I have done this idea a few times in past years. Buy a favorite magazine of paperback book and get the money in small bill denominations likes $1,$2 or $5 and place the bills throughout the pages. If you can, go to the bank and ask for new bills in numerical sequence and give each person the money/bills in the sequence, in between the pages. I hope I made myself clear in explaining this. It was always a surprise for the receiver when they started thumbing thru the book/magazine.

I am including the link to a site that has directions for origami using money.
A few simple fold and you can have a bowtie, boots, etc.
A bit of practice (with plain paper) and you will have a cute little gift that is almost to cute to spend. (Almost)
I use these folds every time I need to give a cash gift. It's easy and very impressive.

I would say that the best way is to give as a gift card for their favorite store.
Or you can put it in an envelope with enough money for the person to actually buy something.
Hope my ideas help.

Sprinkle salt over peanuts whilst finished.

In a gift card or have him go on a scavenger hunt to find it. You could also stick it in a pop-up card.

You can buy miniature stockings and place the money in them, then hang them around on your Christmas tree.
