For science homework I have to find out how many elements are now on the present periodic table. I researched and found 123, but a friend of mine found 112. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks!

God bless!

To some degree these are both right answers. The number of protons in an atom determines what element it is. Scientists have found/made 112 elements by discovering them or pushing the protons together. The only reason the you got 123 is because you counted the ones scientists are predicting will excist. The real answer is 112. Sorry but you were wrong :(

While at least 118 exist and are listed on the periodic table of elements, only 117 are confirmed (have been synthesized) . This is current of Oct 16, 2006.
