It's possible to do anything, but realistically only a few get to the top, no matter in what field. Starting young seems especially important in ballet. Many top ballroom dancers got late starts. Other genres seem to fall between those extremes. Whatever you do, good luck.

You are *not* too old to start training to become a professional dancer - there are many forms of dance - ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, ballroom, latin, hula, falmenco, belly dancing...you get the idea.

I've had teachers who started in their 20's...one was a gymnast/cheerleader and got into dance while in college, another never took any form of dance or excercise, but she took a dance class in college and that was the start of her career.

What makes a huge difference...whether you start dance at age 3 or at 30...is if you are truly passionate about dance.

Evelyn Cisneros was a prima ballerina at the San Francisco Ballet. She started at age 8...couldn't do the splits until high school and was criticized by teachers for not having a good turnout. She came to the San Francisco Ballet at the age of 17 and stayed 23 years, and became its most distinguished and popular ballerina.

In terms of suggestions - which ever form of dance you decide to pursue, I'd recommend that you take ballet, pilates, and yoga. These will help with your overall technique, strength and posture.

Good luck and break a leg!!!

Find a dance studio and join and if you have a dance program at your school make sure you get in a dance class or two as soon as you can. High school dance classes are free so get 'em while you can. This might be going out of your way but you might wanna try getting into a good performing arts school. This way you can take more than one dance class and that will be your focus while you're in high school.

Don't ever just give up on something that you think you could be good at. A friend of mine started in her 40's and she's great! She dances in competitions and has a lot of fun. She does some things better than those who have been dancing since they were three. It's because she works hard and is determined. That's all it takes and you'll be caught up in no time!!!

No don't forget it. If nothing else go for ball room dancing, they teach everything. There are older students of all sorts of acrabatics and tap. Just call around and find them, so what if you have to go with kids younger than you, most dance teachers love to take on older groups. Hey, get out there and find your dream, make your dream but start doin!

It would be very difficult to start in your teens. There is a lot of finite muscle conditioning that happens over years of dance training. I've never seen anyone be successful at that. I hate to discourage you, but I'd certainly have a plan B.

I'd also try anyway, just because I was interested.

No, trust me, you're not too old. I'm 15 and I know people in my grade who are just starting to dance and loving it. And one of the most famous dancers I know of started when she was in college. To help speed you up, though, I would exercise regularly and remember not to overdo it. You're still young, so dancing should come easily to you. Good luck :)
