is what everyone is saying it . A botnet is a network of bots working together to accomplish a task. they used in DOA attacks. But for the most part its used for spamming. But to tell you the truth most company's run botnets they referred to as a cluster or farm. example is a SAN.. A bunch of computers working together to store data..

I cant tell you how to make it unless you know how to program and even then Its kinda scetchy umm you best bet is to find one already made and insert into a computer. You will need a root kit for this because most system have anti-virus and anti-spyware. Root kits run at the kernel level. wow I could get more into this but I have to work stay out of trouble

Internet bots, also known as web robots or simply bots, are software applications that run automated tasks over the internet. Typically, bots perform tasks that are both simple and structurally repetitive, at a much higher rate than would be possible for a human editor alone. The largest use of bots is in web spidering, in which an automated script fetches, analyses and files information from web servers at many times the speed of a human. Each server has a file called robots.txt containing rules for the spidering of that server that the bot is supposed to obey.

In addition to their uses outlined above, bots may also be implemented where a response speed faster than that of humans is required (eg gaming bots and auction-site robots) or less commonly in situations where th emulation of human activity is required, such as in chat bots.

There are many different types of bots. Because of that fact, the second part of your question not specific enough... how do you make one? Well, which kind of bot do you want to make? Besides that is much to complicated to even begin to explain here in Yahoo Answers. Refer to the links below to learn more about bots:

'bots' and 'zombies' are a computer or network security threat.

A 'bot' is a type of malware which allows an attacker to gain complete control over the affected computer. Computers that are infected with a 'bot' are generally referred to as 'zombies'. There are literally tens of thousands of computers on the Internet which are infected with some type of 'bot' and don't even realize it. Attackers are able to access lists of 'zombie' PC's and activate them to help execute DoS (denial-of-service) attacks against Web sites, host phishing attack Web sites or send out thousands of spam email messages.

Should anyone trace the attack back to its source, they will find an unwitting victim rather than the true attacker.
