This is an interesting question because when Marx talked about owners of the means of production most of the industrialized economy was owned by individuals. Therefore, the so-called enemy of the working-class was clear. Today relatively few businesses that are producers of things are actually owned by individuals. Large public publicly owned corporations are owned by so many people that it is difficult to way that anyone really owns the means of production. Some of the largest owners of publicly owned corporations are our very own pension funds! I believe that this is why the German Philosopher Herbert Marcuse said that the real socialist revolution will not be against the 'ruling-class' but against Capital itself.

Production other than by personal services and products generated by an individual or by a partnership of several people are all produced by corporations. The owners of the corporation are people who own shares of the stock of the company. Thus we may say corporations own the means of production; but it is the stockholders who are the real owners through their ownership of the corporation.

In capitalistic system the means of production is with Private Owners of Capital in contrast to public ownership in a Proletarian system. You might have heard of Private Property rights which is synoniumous with efficient markets. It is the rights of private individuals to protect their property which they own.

Accordingly to Marx ( and others ) definition Capitalism is a society where means of production is a private property, e.t. own by individuals or independent institutions ( as opposite to Socialism, where means of production is in collective ownership)
