You will note that only wood bridges were covered. The decks of wood bridges become extremely slippery when it rains or snows. The roof kept the bridge dry, preventing slippery conditions and reducing rot.

Hey Lucy,

They were made of wood, wood rots when exposed to the elements, and it does not like to have shovels, and plows on it either.
