If you do are you more apt to do so when someone is there bell ringing or doesn't it matter to you? I have heard that more money is collected when someone is manning the bucket then when it is left on its own. Why do you think this is, is it because people prefer to give when there is someone who sees them doing so, instead of just giving for the sake of giving?

here in Minnesota the buckets are often left unattended, but I think emptied more often. My children always throw spare change in whenever we see one, bell ringer or not.

i am not a very well off person, and have had to take advantage of Salvation Army programs in the past. i donate money to them to help pay for some of what I needed and to help others get what they need now. Moneywise i do not donate much, i have very little. I donate much of my time to many local charities in the area.

if I have some extra change then I give and prefer not to give in front of anyone. my dad always said, " Son, I'd rather see a good sermon than hear one. " Dad always did at least one good deed a day and he preferred to do it on " the qt " as he called it, never tooting his own horn.

Sometimes. Usually when someone is there - I feel guilty to just walk by without putting some money in the bucket. I don't know if I would support the Salvation Army as part of my normal giving but the fact there is a person there does create some pressure.

We went to the Salvation military and defined our subject. We left their place of work with 4 great grocery sacks of nutrition. Yes, I give to the SA buckets. It wouldn't surprise me if the buckets are more effective with bell ringers working near them. I think people are more apt to feel a) guilty for not giving, and b) bad for the person ringing the bell in vain, and will therefore give even a small amount of change to feel better about themselves and absolve themselves of the guilt associated with merely walking past.

Usually they don't leave the bucket unattended.
I'll drop something in the buckets once or twice, but usually donate to the Salvation Army (because they have the best track record for using the money for what they collected it for) over the Internet using a credit card.

I donate some money into those collection boxes, but I do more charity work on my own. I don't really think it matters under what circumstances you donate your money, as long as you are a giving, helpful, kind person, you are good in my book!

I think that more people give when someone is there because when no-one is 1) they don't notice the bucket as easily and 2) when someone is standing there it shows that they really care about what they are doing. I would be more likely to give if someone was standing out there.

yes I do when im on my way out of the store. I know it goes to a good cost. I think its more of a reminder or a better way to notice the bucket if someone is standing there with a bell

Maybe it's because they feel guilty if they don't give when someone is standing there watching them. I'm not sure. I definitely donate to charity often and I don't care who knows about it. I do it for myself and to help others, not for personal recognition.

I think people give more if the bell ringer is there. But I will tell you that bell ringing gets on my nerves.
