I was wondering what the process is for starting a non-profit. I live in NC. I would like to start an animal non-profit facility. Currently, people are dropping their unwanted animals on my front porch or local people will call us and we help them out. At this time, we have approxiamately 18 dogs, cats, and fish. We also feed the wildlife--deer, racoons, wild cats, etc. I love the animals but I feel like it would be better if we could open an operation legally that would benefit the animals and the community. Are there certain rules pertaining to animal non-profits? What is the average cost to get set up? I need to know everything this entails before I get started. Any information would be wonderful. Thank you in advance!!!!

You need a GOOD attorney AND a GOOD accountant. There are a lot of rules and regulations and it can take a while. I work for a Non- profit shelter and it was a big deal to set up.

Contact an attorney who can tell you the legal requirements for a 501 (c) (3) corporation. He can also explain whether what you are applying for will achieve the goals that you have in mind.
Typically 501 (c) (3) designation is required in order for donations to your cause to be tax-deductible.

You can also look at the IRS regulations, but it would be much simpler to check with an attorney who deals in these matters to learn what's involved and make sure it works like you want it to.

I believe that you will need something like a board of directors along the way, so networking with people who share your love for animals would be helpful there as well. There will also be some reporting requirements.
