STOP running until it is completely healed. You should also consult a doctor, in case you're really injuring yourself badly.

ok some people have no idea what they are talking about. as a fitness instructor in the army for ten years, here is what i recommend.
1. stop until the swelling goes down. if it were just muscle pain, you wouldnt be swollen.
2. when you do start again, start with a brisk walk and build your self up slowly. too strenuous an exercise on a body can dammage it.
3. someone else said it, STRETCH BEFORE ANY KIND OF EXERCISE!!!!!
you might try to rotate your ankle about 20 times each way before a long walk or run. as well as stretching your legs and any other muscles that you are going to be using. take the 5 min to stretch and it may save you money on dr bills later. at a min it will save you alot of pain.

trust me I have this same problem... I started walking before and my ankles would shoot through with pain... because my ankles were weak and weren't use to this kinda of stuff... and also I had sprain my ankle before... and if you have twisted or sprained ankle before that may be one cause because you ankles are weak after that and you just need to build them back up but get an ankle braces that helped me tons go to your local department store and choose the one that best suits you and your pain the stability of the brace counts in the long run

You might have tweaked the muscles in your ankles. I'd wait until the swollen subside for you to run again. Meanwhile, walk fast on treadmill.

Well I am not a doctor but I will tell you what I know. I know that if you have no exercised in a long time, and then you just now start then it can be very painful. This could be one solution is just exercise pain or it could be that when you was running you could've sprung your ankle. This is just what I think it could be. Hope this helps.

You may have a mild sprain. Its hard to tell though in questions like these. Give it a couple of days rest and make sure to warm up before you run. Stretch out a bit (after warming up) and rotate your feet in circles before you run. This might help with the ankles and it will help prevent shin splints as well.
If the pain continues, please go to a doctor.

Try getting an ankle brace, and rest a while, then try running again.

Stop til the swelling goes down, then run every other day for a few weeks, then you can go every day if you want.
