I'm not a big gamer, but I just did a lot of research on my own, and consulted a couple of Computer Tech's about what I need.

For MOST games & music, video, photo's, etc. and to be MS Vista capable, here's what was recommended to me.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13GHz with 2MB L2 cache, and 1066 MHz Front Side Bus
RAM: 1 G Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (667MHz would be nice)
Video Card: 256MB RAM or better
Sound Card: Whatever you decide you like or can afford.
Hard Drive of at least 160 G
Dual CD Drives: 48X CD/DVD Player & 16X CD/DVD dual layer burner
OS: Windows XP Media Center Edition

A PC with the above (less monitor) is about $925 U.S.

If you want to go a little higher end go for the following.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.40 GHz, 4MB L2 cache, 1066 MHz Front Side Bus
2 G RAM
Add about $300 to $350 to the price of the above PC if you add these upgrades.

Here are the approximate prices (lowest) I found on the web for the series of Intel Core 2 Duo Processors. These are all 1066 MHz FSB.

1.86 GHz 2MB L2 Cache = $185
2.13 GHz 2MB L2 Cache = $230
2.40 GHz 4MB L2 Cache = $315
2.66 GHz 4MB L2 Cache = $525

2.66 GHz 4 MB L2 Cache = $1008 (Quad Core)
2.93 GHz 4 MB L2 Cache = $1100 (Quad Core)

From my research and from what was told to me, the Intel Core 2 processors are somewhat faster than the AMD's. To each his own on the CPU selection. Both Intel and AMD are good CPU's.

1G DDR2 SDRAM = $155 approximately

I researched the pricing on Dell, HP, Acer, Compaq, and a few mongrol brands but they were all similar in price and the HP's were more expensive for comparable items.

I even tried pricing out the parts to build my own PC from scratch and it was as much as, or more expensive to do this than it was to simply purchase a premade PC.

Those are the facts as I found them to be.

Hope this helps.

Intel's chip is a better value right now, but I would say go with AT LEAST 1 gig of Ram and a 256 MB graphics card. Also, I'd wait a month so i got vista and a direct X 10 card. If you buy now, you'll get the tail end of the DX 9 cards, and the old operating system, so your compu will be considerably obsolete within a couple of months.

Anything new is gonna do those things. BUT, I'd say at least go for: Core Duo Processor, 512 MB of RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, and 128 Video Card. Those are minimums though.

If you want to play all the latest games, you'll need an Intel Core 2 Duo, 1-2GB of RAM, and at least a 256MB graphics card.

it seems which you have in simple terms have been given out of a time device... i'm specific you have your reasons for dropping time/earnings such historic kit. Please tell me you at the instant are not spending over $a hundred for one in each and every of those beast. i'm specific you have your reasons for staying with 32bit... they at the instant are not valid or sane... yet i'm specific you will no longer supply it up till somebody pulls it out of your chilly lifeless arms. circulate with any type new low-priced device (even $3 hundred) and purchase a USB floppy force. it will run circles around in spite of you're development.
