based on the amount of money that you won in each round?
I just remember these rotating living room-looking sets that were full of furniture, jewelry and appliances and they all had prices on them and you would use your winnings on whatever you could afford in those rooms.
If it was Wheel of Fortune, when did they change that?
I know it wasn't The Price is Right.

You're right, it was Wheel of Fortune. I remember it well. The prizes seemed pretty cheesy but very expensive. It's much better the way it is done now. I'm not sure when they changed it exactly, but I know they did the showroom prizes when Chuck Woolery was the host and during the early years when Pat Sajak hosted. I'm guessing it changed mid-80's.

You're right. It was Wheel of Fortune. I don't know if 'Wheel' first broadcast in the 70's but I know it was done in the early 80's. They change the genre of prizes every few years. I only remember seeing that version for only a couple of years. They also use to play classic Wheel of Fortune on the game show network.

The pilot bares little resemblance to the game fans know today; indeed, the game play element of the pilot was meant to take a backseat to the idea of shopping for glamorous prizes. The pilot opens with the three female contestants browsing through a simulated department store full of prizes. Each contestant is introduced individually and the announcer, Mike Lawrence, describes each of three prizes, increasing in value, that the contestant has chosen to play for. They range in value from a selection of imported wines and cheeses to a brand new 1974 car.

I know it was Wheel of Fortune and it worked exactly how you described it. The prizes all had giant price tags on them and the winner spent their winnings on the prizes. According to wikipedia, the "shopping era" ended in 1987.

It was Wheel of Fortune, and people stopped doing the showroom in the late 1980s where it switched to straight-up cash.

I do miss the showroom, even though most of the prizes were really ugly.

Yes. It was Wheel of Fortune. Gee, I had forgotten about that. Remember the ceramic dog they used to have?

YES it was wheel. when it first debuted the host was Chuck Woolery and the wheel-turner was susan stafford. contestants took their winnings and bought whatever they could from the showroom.
Obviously they didn't like giving away CASH because they made them spend the entire amount

Yeppers. They changed it in the mid 80s. I always thought the people that walked out with the ceramic dalmatian were losers.
