The human eye can detect nearly one million different colors! The average paint store has approximately 160,000 different colors available to paint your house... and every one of them has a name!!! A visit to your local paint store will provide you the opportunity to get a sample of most of these colors.
heliotrope, lilac, lavender... are all colors named after flowers.
gold, silver, bronze, copper, pewter... are all named after metals.
egg shell, terra cotta, ocher, burnt ocher, umber, burnt umber, turquoise, jade, sapphire, aquamarine, coral... are all named after natural occurring objects.
peach, tangerine, melon... are all named after fruits.
Many other colors have the name of an object added to the color name to modify it into a particular hue...
Lemon yellow, Lime Green, Peacock Blue, Emerald green, Battleship gray, Olive Green, Navy Blue, Midnight blue... are just a few.
With 160,000 named colors, the list is almost endless... and grows longer almost daily as someone is always choosing a color and applying their own name to it... and in many cases the name becomes widely known. Doubt me? Who is responsible for "the blue screen of death?"
