I have a decent knowledge of Macromedia's web design software. I have been pondering the idea of starting a web design company but want to hear from those is the business. Is it worth it? Can you make any real money at it (meaning; not living from project to project?) Is a decent knowledge anywhere close to where I need to be?

first of all it is Adobe now..no more Macromedia...
Secondly, even if u know know to use those tools, to become a successful web developer you need to learn more then designing.. a customer would not come to your company, get a layout design for a website and go to another company to do to dynamic codings.. so you need to learn web programming languages and different web technologies.. now a days even the simplest website would be dynamic...
and moreover these days all the websites are changing to AJAX..
so you need to know languages like PHP, ASP, JSP, and technologies like AJAX and more...
with these requirements fulfilled you can make a great deal of money from web designing...

best of luck and hope i helped!

While I say decent is better than nothing, you need to know more than just "decent," when it comes to web design (WD). I do jobs here and there and find them to be profitable, but it takes really big jobs to have the money security I think you are looking towards. So, having just a basic understanding of Macromedia software probably won't get you that. To be a good WD company you have to have a range in skills, HTML, CSS, php/asp, AJAX, e-commerce, etc... I'm sure you can find clients that just want basic, but expect a basic pay rate with it. That is just the coding aspect, you also need to be good at layout/design, which is where I usually have problems, photoshop is not a friend of mine. But luckily where my design abilities lack a partner of mine is awesome at, we play off each others talents real well. What we did at first is went freelance just to build a resume, then created an online presence/portfolio of the freelance stuff we had done. Then went to sites like http://www.ifreelance.com/ and found jobs we knew we could handle and got cash and a more robust portfolio. Soon from having our name/logo on our projects linked back to our site, more offers came calling. Just keep up to date on old and the newest technologies. I hope I gave you a some insight to how I see it and what I've encountered.

Damn sure is. I'm an Art Director at an advertising
agency. In my off time I build sites for some individuals
but mostly small businesses. Build your presence on
the web first. Get yourself listed in as many search
engines as possible. Local national and international.
Another free way to advertise locally is Craigslist.com.
Print out business cards on an as needed basis, if you
have a printer. Otherwise look in the phone book.
Be aggresive when looking around in your area for
businesses without sites. Be professional no less.
Get yourself a copy of the Graphic Artist Guild
Handbook of Pricing & Ethical Guidelines. Hope this
helps a bit. Good Luck.

decent knowledge is nowhere near where you need to be. Dynamic is where the web is heading. SQL, Oracle, MySQL, ASP.Net, most web design wanters are wanting web developers who can program Visual Basic, C#, Java etc. You could probably due low-budget and low-key. but that's about it anymore

no, you are not being realistic,

in other words.......
can you build a complete website on your own?

No you cant, so therefore without education you cant answer the question.
