what are slacks, i gather they are some kind of trousers but what kind, is it an american term (im english) or am i just stupid

Slacks is an American term for dress pants, or as you'd say "trousers". Usually like something you'd wear to an interview. As in, not jeans.

Originally they were mens trousers. The name slacks was first used in the UK and not America as they would have you believe. I remember my Grandfather using the expression over fourty years ago.
