I have heard this phrase said time and time again, but never really knew the answer......so why does the caged bird sing?......

A bird singing is it's way of talking. The bird is singing so it can be social. i had a friend with a bird and if you started to talk to it when it was singing, it would stop and look at you like it was listening, then it would start whistling and stuff, kind of like a conversation :)

If u were a caged human, would u just sit there doing nothing, staring out at the world? Plus, a bird naturally sings all the time, and well, since a caged bird can't fly, the only other thing it can do is sing... well, this is my guess.
