Marketers would know this all too well..
Yellow is the color noted to be the MOST noticable to the human eye. Marketers know, if they have to grab attention on a billboard hung a mile above a freeway.. USE YELLOW!!
People will definately look.. McDonald's "Golden Arches" are a perfect example of this.
Hence why school buses are yellow.. human brilliance at work there..

Good question.
My best guess is visibility.
Yellow, being close to the center of our visible light spectrum reflects more light and is seen easier and quicker.
Red on the other hand is at one end of the spectrum (next is infra-red, which most of us can't see) and in the dark, red looks black.
Blue on the other hand, is at the other end.

So that they are recognized and seen more easily. You'll notice that they have a special color of yellow.

yellow is easy to see its bright so other veicles see the bus when it stop to let kids off

Hmmmm, I thought they were orange. Anyway, it is helpful for color blind people like me at least I can see them clearly

cause you can't miss a color that bright...safety hazard....has a high visibility....

I think they are more of an orange-ish color.
