Apparently, pirates burried treasure because the treasure would be safer left hidden in an undisclosed location than if they took it with them on the ship. Pirates were notorious for raiding one another's ships and stealing one another's booty. So, by burying it, they had a better chance of holding onto the treasure and collecting it at a later date. However, the only pirate known to actually bury treasure was William Kidd.
