i need a server for my forum. and i know a tiny bit about them. anyway i can get a free one?

a server is just another name for a computer system that is dedicated to perform a specific function. can can take any PC and turn it into a file server, DHCP server, back-up server, etc.
dedicated servers provide fault tolerance in a network. if one goes down you still have the other servers operational while you bring the other back up. if you have one computer and it is preforming multiple essential tasks you have a big problem when it goes down (and it will).

If you use XP then XP comes with IIS server. To load it you need to go to control panel . add/remove program then click on windows component and check IIS(server) . Now if you want a server to build databases etc.. you can find one for free called Apache and download the free version. It runs on Win & Linux.

You can not get a server for free but you can get a hosting for your forum for free. Try:
http://www.jconserv.net/
http://www.forumsplace.com/
There always tends to be a catch with free hosting.

technically youre using one now
u can use any computer for a server but depending on the size of your site u may need a larger amount of hard drive space
you dont exactly need a big dell tower but theyre nice to have,,mac g5 servers are nicer tho....

A free one?!
I do not think that is possible.
You can use any computer, you just need load it with a server OS (operating system)

You could get a freeweb host? If that is what you mean..getting a free server..unlikely..
