I have a feeling that sexually transmitted diseases ran rampant back then, and so they might have avoided pregnancy via uteran scarring, etc.

Why do you think they did? I think all we really have to go on as far as that part of history goes is what we either read about or what Hollywood has portrayed. And neither is probably very accurate. So odds are just like during slavery when the white masters came for the black slave women and they bore their mixed children, so did the women on pirate ships bare many children as well. Some were miscarried and some were born alive and well, not ever knowing who their fathers were. They certainly had menstrual cycles so it was un avoidable. And no way did any drunken, filthy pirate consider the 'pull out' method to avoid pregnancy or any other method for that matter. I just think we haven't heard all the real life ugly details of that era and probably never will.

You cannot avoid pregnancy after having sex unless you have Emergency Contraceptive within 72 hours. The easiest way to avoid pregnancy is to use a form of birth control; i.e. condoms, birth control. Also, it would be near impossible to let you know the exact days that you can "avoid" pregnancy without knowing specifics and even then it's still not sure fire. A woman ovulates usually two weeks before her period starts. During the days leading up to ovulation and then ovulation itself is when an egg is released and the woman is most fertile. Having unprotected sex during those days would most likely result in pregnancy. Your best bet to avoid pregnancy though is to either use condoms all the time or to have your girl start taking birth control.

Abortions have been around a looooong time, it's not a new phenomena... Look at groups in souther france during the 11th and 12th centuries; there were people who actually aborted babies there.

I don't think they cared. I think they disposed of any inconvenience that put a dent in their lifestyle, just as it is today with abortions, and all the various horrid things that humans do to innocent human life.

They stick a sponge with vinegar on it in the woman's vagina. Don't know if that work though...I wouldn't recommend it though.
