A crystal is a generic term for any mineral with a well expressed shape (polyhedral shapes with smooth faces). The mineral you probably associate with "Crystal" is crystalline quartz. The difference between the two is their chemical composition. Quartz is Silica Dioxide (SiO2), diamond is almost pure carbon. In terms of crystalline structure, quartz has a trigonal structure, diamond has an isometric structure.
If you're looking at jewelry, a very simple way to tell is the price. Everything else being equal (type, metal, price, etc), you'll get a bigger, more colorful quartz crystal than diamond every time.

Crystal is a term used to describe the arrangement of atoms in a solid mineral, defined by the type of atomic bond. There are many different arrangements possible, with diamond being a particular arrangement of carbon atoms described in physics as tetrahedral. Therefore, diamond is a type of crystal; but so are sodium chloride (salt), quartz and iron, among many others.

Diamonds tetrahedral crystal arrangement is particularly strong, and only occurs under specific circumstances: correct heat and pressure etc, which gives diamond its unique properties.

A diamond is always the hardest of the two. So the diamond will scratch the crystal, the crystal would not scratch the diamond. I agree ; you would always need to carry a diamond around for this test.

what you are after is the mohs scale of hardness which gives a mineral/crystal a number between 1 and 10; with 1 being talc and 10 being diamond. Anything below the scale or handness of 5 can be easily scratched by steel.

A diamond is actually a TYPE of crystal.

Are you perhaps referring to cubic zirconium?

*Edit: As far as Swarovski Crystals are concerned-they're made from glass.
