I'm currently an English teacher certified in NYS from grades 7 - 12 and would like to tutor part-time. How do I get started? I am home raising my kids at the moment and word of mouth is difficult. Flyers at the supermarket and libraries aren't really working. Any ideas?

Try contacting your administrators to let them know you are available for tutoring. In my district, tutors are needed when certain students, especially Sp. Ed., are suspended for a certain amount of days, or when a student is homebound due to illness/accidents, etc. and the school must comply with some law as to still providing educational services.

You could try an online tutoring company instead of trying to recruit students for yourself. They will pay less than a private tutor would make, but the work is going to be steady and you wouldn't have to have kids coming into your home or you going to theirs. It can be very flexible and rewarding. Try checking out something like Tutor.com.
