What is a good way to increase the default volume of a music file?

Here's my problem. I have some music that is by default, a few deciables lower then some of my other music. I use it as custom music while playing a game, but because of that, the music is too soft, while some of the other files are just right. This means I can not just turn up my sound because the game or the music that is at the right volume would blast me away. it's rather annoying to have it so quiet, even when just playing it in a media player. I've heard that some programs can recode your default volume of the song to be louder. Is this a good way to fix my problem and if so, where can I get a free download of such a program so I can fix this?

Without hearing the songs that are "too quiet" it's hard to diagnose the best way to answer this.

In many cases, the mastering of songs is compressed to make it seem louder. This is a very popular trend in newer music especially as record companies want to out-loud the competition. This contributes to an overall gap in loudness when you mix older not as compressed tracks with newer ones.

If you use a lot of MP3s, the digital compression of these files can also cause a loss in audio "loudness". MP3s are compressed files as it is, shaving off ones and zeros to make it easier for net transport, but some audio fidelity is lost in the process, especially when you drop the bit rate.

In all, your best bet is to get a sound production program. Look up Audacity, its a freeware for audio production and it's pretty user freindly and will be able to increase the loudness of your songs witht he normalize function. while doing this without altering other parameters will put an audiophile's hairs on end, for general use this will get you by.
