I mainly use the word, excel programs, as well as researching on the internet, email, etc. I currently have a compaq presario 1.2 GHz, 40 GB hard drive, with XP (home version) and it's been working ok. Just slow. There are so many to choose from now days I don't know where to begin. Any suggestions would be apprciated. Thanks.

If i were you i'd order a DELL. They have great customer service and you'll be able to get a great computer for not very much money. If you would like your computer to be fast see if you can get it with at lest 512MB ram, however 1GB of RAM or more would be much much better... Also... the core duo processor would be nice, and core 2 duo would be AWESOME for speed... make sure you get a SATA hard-drive as opposed to the standard IDE hard drive... you do all that it should bring you a GREAT machine for not a lot of money....

GOOD LUCK!

Now a days, all computer are made up of mostly the same parts from the same few manufactures. Your best bet is to go by who has the best customer service, return policy etc... For what ever price range you look at, you will get the same thing from all companies. Just my 2 cents.

personally i think your computer would do just fine. you said it runs slow. it needs more ram memory.
if you want to buy a new one, a processor around 2ghz with 1gb ram, 80 gb hard drive and a low range video card will do fine. you dont need a powerfull computer. the more power, the more noise and bigger electricity bill.
remember to get one with a slim tower and a large flat screen monitor. it has to impress.
