I know this is a dumb question, but most of it seems late 80's-early 90's while some seems present-day. So which is it?

The opening credits show Napoleon's school ID card and it says "2004-2005" on it. So it's present day, but since it takes place in a small town OUT of California, they're a little behind in the times. I had this mock-theory that the time machine worked, Napoleon brought back a tape of music from the future, put it in Don's locker to prove he time-travelled, Summer Wheatley liked it so she and her friend's used the Backstreet Boys' song for their skit that took place in 1991. :P

Some of the styles are unrealistic for the 80s or early 90s but the furniture or the 20 foot phone cord was 80s!

It looks as if it should be set in the 80's however it is in the 2000's if you remember Kipp chats on the net with "Hot babes all day" Not so much an activity of the 80's, plus when Lafonda comes to visit she has Kipp dress like a thug gangsta; which style did not exist back in the 80's. Also, there are roller blades in the movie, I believe it to be late 90's early 2000's

Napoleon Dynamite has an 80's feel, but I think it appears so because the little town where it is set is a little behind the times! I think it is actually set in 2000 and something!

I wondered the same thing when I was watching the movie. I thought it was suppose to be the early 90's or even the 80's. But, according to Wikepedia the movie is set in modern days.

Well I presume it to be early to mid 90's because remember Uncle Rico wanted to go back to 1985 or 1987 using that bs time machine that Kip purchased off the internet.

i became questioning an identical concern, because of the fact there are countless 80's references: the music on the promenade, the hairstyles, etc. whether, a pal of mine reported that for the time of Idaho, they're form of at the back of the cases, and in case you undergo in innovations, Uncle Rico reported he needed there became a time gadget the place he could desire to pass returned to 1984...and he's in his 30's, so i could wager that is meant to take place in the 2000's.

The clothes and everything seem to be kinda 80's butI'm pretty sure it takes place in present time.

I've wondered about that as well, and you're right it does seem very late 80's. Maybe I should get the DVD and watch the commentary!
I do love this film though!
