Considering choosing this as a major but I have several reservations: 1) as a nurse, if I don't like a patient, he/she will be discharged soon and out of my hair. With teaching, I'm stuck w/ that kid every single day for 10 months. 2) the pay 3) the politics in education. I understand there's plenty. Feedback please.

Positive reasons-

1. Helping the youth of America
2. In Elem. School the kids still like going to school
3. Gov't job in public ed so you get money put away into a retirement fund
4. Holidays/Vacations
5. Teachers are needed, so you can find an area you like to teach and teach that grade level/subject.
6. Some parents who take part in helping you out, your school out, and help their child

Negative-
1. Pay unless you have a good State Union/Association where you live
2. Politics-Bush implemented NCLB act and it puts a lot of pressure on teachers, students, and testing. (Makes the one-sized fits all approach..when you have a diverse pop of students with diff. backgrounds, experiences, English lang. learners, special ed...AND THEY ALL HAVE TO BE AT 100% or your school will be labeled. )
3. Some parents who don't care about education, think you are just a babysitter, and don't discipline their child at home

Nursing pays better than teaching elementary aged kids so if you can't stomach the pay cut don't do it.

The kids (unless you keep them back) are out of your hair after that 10 month period and someone else's problem the next year.

Politics exist in every profession.

You may find that the parents are more of a problem than the children and often the parents contribute to the child's problems by blaming you as the teacher instead of taking charge of their own child's educational deficiencies and behavior problems. It's a very difficult and often thankless job.

My best friend is a 2nd grade teacher and it definitely has it's ups and downs.

You have to weigh out the pros & cons. Make a list and then decide which one suits you the best. Remember being a nurse isn't that easy either. . .My cousin is an RN and had a patient attack her and is going through physical therapy. Also you have to have a good immune system to be both a teacher and a nurse.

The benefits are definitely in the vacation time and weekends. Sure I go to work sometimes on weekend but only because I choose to. I always have holidays off and no one can change that. I can work anywere I want to. I get to work with some wonderful adults and children. I get to go home every day knowing that I am a force of positive change in the lives of future leaders.
