As said before, Charles Rangel of New York has suggested it, because of his belief that the military is a low-income and minority establishment, and that the GOP is sending young, poor, minorities to die instead of their affluent sons and daughters, and if EVERYONE had the same chance of being taken, then perhaps the war mongers would think twice.
Here's his interview in Time Magazine this month:
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1565537,00.html
Is your push for a draft purely symbolic, or do you really think there should be a draft?
If we had had a draft, those who decided to have an elective--rather than defensive--strike against Iraq would not have received public or congressional support. When you're talking about war and you have no concept of anyone being lost in your family or your community, then it's human nature to be more prone to say, "Let's fight, I'll hold your coat." I'm serious about it. As of now, I would be satisfied to have a discussion.
---
Of course, no one (except maybe a few fringers) really supports a draft. It's much more likely that the Dem controlled legislature would coerce Pres Bush to withdraw troops from Iraq much sooner than they would vote for a draft.
So there's the comprehensive answer.
(I also agree, though, that compulsory military of civilian service for all kids may be a very positive thing for our country, but that's another issue altogether.)

Doubtful. People are just getting crazed over it because there was a story released about how we have so many troops out, we are overextended, and we don't have enough new people signing. People wouldn't tolerate a draft, and if people thought we were still in real danger, they'd sign up willingly in droves, just like after 9/11.
Alex is right that a democrat did propose it; however, I think that you'll find that most democrats are not for a draft at all. (Not that you implied that at all, Alex - didn't want you to think I singled you out, lol.)

To clear up all of the responders claiming "the democrats want one": ONE Democrat has proposed it. It is not the same as saying all DEmocrats are for it. Just like the right wing spin machine to take one person's comments and apply it across the board to everyone who belongs to the same group.
That is akin to saying that Tom DeLay committed election fraud, so I guess all Republicans commited election fraud. Everyone (Dems and GOP both) need to quit buying in to the political rhetoric and learn to think for yourselves. Research the facts before you start verbally xeroxing everything that comes out of Bill O'Reilly's mouth.

If Rep. Charles Rangle, a Democrat from NY has his way, there will be a draft. That's right DEMOCRATS WANT THE DRAFT!
Hey, the only reason they voted against it last time was because they wanted to win the election. Wise Up! You think that they would have been able to sway so many people if they told everyone that they were going to call for the draft?
That's why they say they won't raise taxes...then after the election ....they do.
Look at their actions...not their words.

I won't leave if there's a draft. It's my country. I may not agree with the war but it's my country and in the end I'm a patriot and love it and will defend it!

No. Neither party has a plan to, or the political will to. It doesn't make sense when we are planning a withdrawl and meeting all our recruitment goals, and we have record reenlistment.
And Glenn has a history of exaggerating.
And no, DEMOCRATS DONT WANT THE DRAFT because they overwhelmingly oppose it and have voted against it, Frank. But thanks for knowing the facts.

No, ole NY Charlie, a Demo, had proposed it, but it wasnt his first time doing so, and it wont pass. However, if we did get entangled with Iran or N Korea, doubtful I know, but still, if we did there may very well be a need for a conscription. Who can know right now...

It would be a boon to humanity. I will get the kids of today off their butts, rip them away from computer games, teach them to think for themselves. It will teach them some responsibility, and maybe how to be polite, amongst other things required to be human.........Let's not forget productive and taking responsibility for their own actions,,,,,,
