100 years ago, there were virtually NO taxes. No gas tax, no death tax, no _fill in the blank_ tax, AND we had no debt. Why did we initiate all these taxes and suddenly we have all this debt? Perhaps we should stop taxing everything and stop spending so much money on government programs.

Well, in the case of gas taxes, 100 years ago the government wasn't maintaining roads for cars and trucks to drive on.

But you've hit on it - we have so many taxes because our governmental bodies are spending so much. Some of the spending is necessary, some isn't. Government seems to have taken on a good many "responsibilities" that it didn't used to have, and that aren't mandated by the constitution.

Much of the basic responsibility for this comes back to the common person. In many cases, people vote based on promises to give more that will benefit them. The money has to come from someplace.... therefore, more taxes are needed.
