I've had a Dell for about 2 years and wonder when I should think about replacing it.

It depends. If you care about how it looks, you can replace it anytime. If you care about functionality, it should last until it cannot run some new program fast enough for you.

I've had my IBM A31 for 3 years now, still going strong (dropped from lap several times). I've had an HP since January, reinstalled all software twice so far. Part of replacing is your "greed" for new stuff that's available. I think like cell phones, laptops are "intended" to be replaced every two or so years.

you should be able to get an easy 10 years out of a laptop. solid state components have no moving parts which greatly expands the operational lifetime of electronic devices.

take care of your laptop and it will take care of you. I wouldn't even think about getting a new laptop after only 2 years unless your company is providing you with one or you can write it off as a business expense.

max out your RAM, add in larger/faster hard drive and re-install the operating system (uninstall all of the unnecessary bundled software after). that's all you need to do...

If it still works for you, stick with it. I still have a laptop from the mid 1990's and it still works fine (although very slowly lol). Just remember, the older it gets the slower it seems go run.
