I almost hate to say it ,,,,but yes. You should already be the administrator on his computer. But if not, I feel that as a responsible parent and adult you should be able to "police" his activity. At 16 he is not able to make all of the decisions correctly concerning the things he can get into or get invited into. This doesn't mean I feel you should want him to do things as you would, he is a seperate person with his own ideas and feelings. Just help him to stay out of trouble and let him know you care.

Who cares who purchased it. He lives in your house, eats your food, uses your water, electricity and gas, probably gets rides where he needs to go or maybe even had a car bought for him, and you have surely bought him many items of clothing and so on. You have every right in the world to do what you think is necessary until your child no longer needs to have a parent responsible for their actions. If he doesn't want to give you the password, take it away from him. There is too much going on in the world to not be concerned. I remember the 13 year old boy who was busy "performing" for a child molester via webcam and somehow finally the man was turned in or something like that. The boy was on a talk show anyway and he had been lured in online. You aren't wrong to ask for it.

You should be set up as an administrator on his laptop and he as a user or power user. This way you can control what he can/can't do on the laptop as well as control the passwords. He will be unable to lock out the administrator without the administrator password and you could change his password if necessary.

Privacy - He/She is living under your roof. You have every right to know whats happening on and off the internet/laptop. If they want privacy give them a diary.

He is sixteen. You have got to realize that he's growing up and needs some privacy. Forcing a teen to open up is not the solution.
