There was a docomentry on television about the history of the christmas tree last Christmas night, because it was twelve monthes ago when I watched I can not remember the exact country that started it all. It was in Europe long before the United States had any states to unite.

For many years the xmas tree was found in various forms. Usually it was hung with fruit and sugar plums. Only the very very rich could afford to buy other forms of decorations for their trees. It wasn't until the Industrial Revolution that manufactering processes meant that various baubles becaem cheap enough to make and sell that everyone could buy them, thus allowing the Xmas tree we more or less know now.

Hexidecimally yours,

The first documented use of an evergreen tree in a Christmas celebration was in Riga, Latvia, in the year 1510 according to many sources.

Marin Luther is generally credited with making them popular so I would have to say Germany, based on your given choices. I would think that trees had been decorated for many years as a cheap ready thing to decorate.

I think I remember that the 4th century Romans used candles in trees in their christmas celebrations, which would make the answer Italy.
