In American football, if they go for a first down, and fail, they are entitled to a fourth down. If they go for a field goal and miss, the other team takes over possession of the ball. In Canadian football, the other team gets possession because Canadian football only allows 3 downs to make a first down. You weren't specific in what you were asking about.

There is 4 downs. Think of a down as a "chance", another words 4 "chances" to get 10 more yards or a touchdown. After 3rd down the team can punt the ball away to the other team or go for it on 4th down and try to get back to 1st down by gaining the remaining yardage from the previous 3 downs. By punting the ball the offensive team will hand the ball over to the other team and have the other team be farther away from the endzone.

They get one more down. The team with the ball gets 4 tries at going a distance of 10 yards. If successful, they get another 4 tries for the next 10 yeards and so on. Often, on the 4th try, the team with the ball will punt the ball to the other team to try to give themselves a better field position in stopping the other team.

If a team has a 3rd down and they miss, it is the 4th down. They can either run or pass the ball and try for a conversion, kick a field goal (if they are close enough), or they can punt. If they go for the conversion and miss, it is the other teams ball at that spot. If they punt, the other team gets the ball further down the field (which is better).

Yes. They keep the ball & have one more shot. If, on 4th down they go for it & don't make the first down the other team takes over right there. If they don't go for it they can either try to kick a field goal for three points or punt the ball to the opposing team.

Then it is 4th down. Only if a team goes for it on 4th down and misses is when the other team gets the ball.

They keep the ball, but it is now 4th down. Teams usually punt on 4th down, because if they go for it and miss then the other team gets the ball.

Yes, they keep the ball. They have 4 downs to go 10 yards. In Canada, they only have three, so it would be a turnover there.

if you are saying that they fail to get the first down, then they do keep the ball because there are 4 downs not 3.
If you are talking about kicking a field goal then they do not keep the ball if they miss.

If you play Canadian football, you have lost the ball, in the US they will give you another try.
