People associate snow with the holidays and feel happy (to some extent as long as it's not a blizzard) when it's snowing, especially on Christmas Eve, the day this song takes place.

However, when snow turns into rain on Christmas Eve, people are disappointed. It sort of brings everyone back to reality as the ending of this song does.

One of my favorite holiday songs -- haven't heard it yet this year, but I'm looking forward to catching it soon on the radio.

The temperature got warm enough to where it wasn't snowing anymore, it was raining instead.

I believe symbolically it means that at that moment his trip down memory lane with the woman he once loved was now over. It began when the snow started to fall in the beginning of the song.

It means just what it says....the precipitation that was falling at that time had changed from snow to rain. Maybe it was a metaphor for how he was feeling as their visit was over....perhaps everything went from all light and fluffy and beautiful to all wet and soggy and yucky....or then again....maybe it just stopped snowing and started raining.
