There is actually a disorder related to this sort of thing. I'm not saying that everyone with an untidy house is suffering from it, but there's a real, clinical disorder (often related to adult ADD and other syndromes) associated with living in severely unsanitary conditions. These people are commonly referred to as "Messies", and have serious problems with organization and other things that make housekeeping a normal task for unafflicted people. Perhaps it's an issue for your friends. Here's one of many websites dealing with it:

Animals adapt to their environment. They become "used to" it. This is how some children in the world can live with flies crawling on their eyeballs without blinking! This is how some people can have children, even though their trailer homes smell like mildew and they have no way of supporting themselves. People are highly adaptable animals. This enabled us to survive various conditions throughout the ages.
As for your friendship situation, I'd advise not going over there. Be honest. If they can't accept you for who you are (a person that doesn't like roaches crawling everywhere) then why should you accept them as a friend?

you can help buy not helping. you know what I mean? they don't want your help or any body else. there not much you can do. I also don't understand why or how people can live that way. and I knew a few people like that. I think it's mental and lazy. And the sad think is if they have children, they have to live in it. there's not much you can do. I wouldn't go over there house, if I was you. the thing is your offending them. there's not much you can for people like that.

Maybe they never had a clean house when they were growing up. Some people don't know how to clean properly. I would invite them to my house from now on. But, when they come over, make sure they don't have any little riders on them, like fleas, lice, roaches, etc.

They are slobs and are comfortable living that way. Are they men? Because men seem to have a higher tolerance for garbage than women do, at least in my experience. Tell them that this place is disgusting and that you can't risk coming over and bring cockroaches to your place.

i think it is because it is all they know, they probably have never experienced a real, clean house
