How much are you planning on spending?!
I just read an article in PC Mag - they built a kick a@@ gaming rig for $6500 that has a quad core Intel QX6700 Extreme and 2 GeForce 8800s and 2 Raptors 150s, and a new nVidia 630 chipset. and blahblah blah.

Also the clock speed of the CPU is not the most important part. You have to realize that one of the fastest stock dual core CPUs out there Intel Core 2 Extreme is running only @ 2.67GHz, but can surely be overclocked ... Now, for single cores like Pentium 4 the speeds go over 3.4GHz ...
AMD is in the hole now, good thing they bought ATI or they'd be crying very much...
So, my suggestion -- Intel core 2 6600 CPU on nVidia 570 or intel chipset, with a 512M GDDR3 video card like GeForce 7900GT or Radeon X1900XTX (XT), and at least 250G HDD, Dual Layer DVD-RW .... am I forgetting something?
Oh yeah - a kick *** monitor Dell 2007wfp, I have it and love it!

Well, I hope you get the idea, e-mail me if you have any more questions, I just built a new system 2 months ago, can send you some specs, pix, suggestions.

GOOD LUCK.

P.S. Forgot about RAM ... go for at least 1G of DDR2 667.

P.S. again ... hehe, sorry ... newegg.com is one of the best websites for computer hardware plus tons of reviews from user that are buying stuff and using it ... and meeeeeee..

Actually look at the Intel Core 2 Duo. They've engineered this processor so that a higher CPU speed is not needed.

For mainboards, typically ASUS is the leader in the industry. Make sure you get a mainboard that utilizes the latest SATA technology.

For video adapters look at adapters that have lots of video RAM 256MB or higher and a good video pipeline.

For RAM crucial sells a product line called Ballistix which is supposed to be very good. Look into the PC25300 or PC6400 range and go with 1GB modules. I'd get at least 2GB.

For your Hard Disk (supportive of the mainboard) go with the latest SATA hard disk that has a small access time and large buffer.

For an optical drive make sure you at least get a 16X dual layer DVD writer.

For CPU coolers make sure you get one with a lot of surface area

For the case, make sure you can draw in a lot of air. I like having two input fans and one exhaust fan.

i just did and its a lot of work, try an athlon 64 type processor, pick your own realy but, check the socket on the motherboard will take it and your ram, it may not!! may need a new heat sink and you will need thermail greese to fit the heat sink, if i may advise also get a good case with some fancy design and fans with controls, so much smother running processor as a result of my new fans!!
