I suppose this is a question that was assigned to you to get you thinking about exponents. Aside from the obvious, use pencil and paper, you'd think of it this way. Since 9 = 3 x 3, 9^4 would be (3^2)^4. Since, when you raise a power to another power, you multiply the exponents, this would be 3^8.

I assume you are not talking about the 9 button on your computer, but rather on your calculator. Otherwise, how did you type this message?

1) You could calculate it yourself with pencil and paper.

2) You could rewrite it as 9^4 = (3^2)^4

3) You could use the calculator on your computer. The 9 seems to work there just fine.
