they are aware that people say they are but there is a disconnect that prevents them from understanding the problem
BUT DO NOT confuse a pathological liar with someone who is aware and in full control ( they don't care but they are aware ) they make up 75% of the people LABELED pathological by laymen

I have a nephew who is a (stereotyped (hasn't been officially diagnosed) pathological liar! I believe that he thinks his life isn't "great" / "grand" / "wonderful" as he believes it should be so he lies about everything to make him sound like this wonderful child. He is the star of the basketball team...he has straight A's, he is being accepted into honors programs, he makes 11 dollars an hour working part time in a gas station (yes, sometimes his lies are even too much to fathom)...etc!
Actually - he never tried out for the team - so he doesn't play basketball...
Can't remember the last C he got, much less an A....which, there goes the honor classes...
And if I can make 11 dollars an hour at 17 working part time at a gas station...I am in the wrong career...HA!
When he is confronted with all these lies he tells, he just blows up and won't talk to anyone. He knows what people are calling him, but he continues to do this...we don't know why...and frankly it's not my place to tell his parents any more than they already know...they basically say there is nothing more that we can do now...it's just the way he is and he will have to learn to deal with this in the real world!
But, I believe they are not aware!

By definition pathology make it difficult for them to discern the truth from the false. "ya thaaats the ticket"
It is a condition of "personality" development, lying generally has an etiology in social learning.. How the person adapts to stressful situations and how they are reacted to in these situation makes is easy or hard for the person to lie.
I've know pathological types that can re-learn things when confronted with the truth.. If they don't have anti-social or psychopathological narcissism they can correct the behavior. But often a pathological liar has an overlapping personality disorder which is the true condition. (Do a Google on DSM+AXIS II+PERSONALITY DISORDER)

No, typically pathological liars are not not aware of the fact that they are lying constantly. And, often times they believe their own lies. This is a psychological disorder. It is most often a personality disorder and pathological liars fall under both the diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Anti Social Personality Disorder. Of course, pathological lying is only one of the several criteria needed to meet the diagnosis of either disorder but it is one of the classic identifiers. Hope this helps answer your question.

Men are pathological liars when it comes to having to confront emotional issues with women....some men say it's just a 'guy' thing to constantly lie, even about small or inconsequential things....I say, 'get some courage' you spineless wimps----we are sick of your excuses!

No and they even believe they're own lies. My ex-boyfriend is a pathological liar and he doesn't think he's lying which is what makes them such good liars.

it's really easy to convince yourself that your lies are true. they lie to themselves. they build up layers of belief systems. i would say not on a conscious level but more on an unconscious level because of the cognitive dissonance. the ones i have seen will start babbling incoherently if you confront them with verified facts that contradict what they are saying. it also depends on how far fetched the lies are. my experience is not in anyway extensive though. i am just refering to knowing whether they are lying or not.

I doubt it. They lie on impulse and they don't think anything about it. They believe their lies too and that's what makes it worse.
