Many actually used their left hand to wipe, which is why the left hand is considered "unclean" in many cultures. Others used leaves or bark to clean up.

In Morocco they don't use toilet paper to this day. The toilets are so filthy I never worked out what I was supposed to use. Good thing I took a lot of tissues when I went there. UGH.

In the East, Bathed and they still do, paper is not hygenic and we are not as advanced as you would think...in fact in the East we are considered barbarians...I agree with them...paper.....sheesh...
