Game Adviser from microsoft (http://www.gamesforwindows.com/) is a good way to see if your system is capable of running a game. Relying on recommended/minimum specs needed on the boxes is also a good rule of thumb, but I recommend Game Adviser.

It will analyze your system's capabilities and compare it to the game you want to run.

To check your memory capacity(RAM)
Go to Accessories---> System ---> System Information
At the system summary
it will say "Total Physical Memory", which is a number of your total memory .

To check your graphic memory
Go to Accessories--> System ---> System Informatioin
Go to Components---> Display
It will say "Adapter Ram", which is a number of your total graphic memory card

To check free space of your harddrive
Go to My COmputer
Right Click on your hard-drive icon
Select " Properties"
It will tell you how much space you have left.

Then you match those three numbers(Ram,Graphic and harddrive) to minimum requirement of the game you want to play.
If they are higher than min. req. , then you'll be fine.

At least now you have three basic checklists for your computer.

Check out Dr. Hardware...run the quick scan on the first screen and it will tell you your system specs.
