Rents in NYC for a small one-bedroom or efficiency/loft are starting at $1200/month and you won't find many in that price range. Better budget at least $1500/month for rent, possibly even more, and be prepared with 3 times the rent (first month, last month and security deposit) in hand when you go looking for an apartment. Lower-rent apartments in NYC go really, really fast; by the time you even see the ad in the paper, there's already a line around the block to get in and check it out. The landlord is going to rent to the first person that shows up with a check.

When you make your budget, you want to earn *after taxes* at least double what your rent is, so you will have money for utilities, food, clothes, and other living expenses. If your rent is $1500 and you take home only $2000 a month, you will be miserable because you'll be broke all the time!

It really depends on where you live. It wouldn't hurt for you to grab a local paper and start looking at apartment ads. Also, see if there is a free apartment listing booklet at the grocery store. That will give you a good idea of apartment costs in your area.

I would advise you - starting out and having so many other financial necessities - to have a roommate. It's hard to be on your own at first. It may take some adjusting to another person, but it can make life easier.

Good luck!

In NYC, I can't imagine an average 18 year old could legally earn enough to afford their own apartment.

it would be nice if you live with your parent , longer and save all the money you can, if you move in a home and apartment its' going to be costly, the more money you save the better you be off.
