It's too bad that you feel that way. However my child attends a large public high school where there are a great number of students who don't speak English. The teachers are presented with the task of teaching English and Spanish speaking kids. Let me tell you, I am impressed with the remarkable job that they do. They donate their time before and after school for those kids who need extra help, or need to make up a test or assignment. I speak with my child's teachers on a weekly basis, via phone or email. They are never too busy for me or my child. The average high school teacher has about 200 different children to educate each day. That is why they usually do not contact the parents unless there is a major problem. It is the parent's job to contact the teacher! That's what I do. Most teachers do the best they can to educate our children, but it is a parent's responsibility to ensure that their child is doing their homework, keeping good attendance, and is to school on time each day ready to learn.

If more parent's would take an active role in their child's academic life, teachers would have better results.

I never had a problem if I needed anything from my teachers and they where always there if I needed to talk or anything, but unfortunately things have changed since teachers have been caught doing things with students.Teachers r not even aloud to put there hand on there shoulder not even a hug if there crying. This is also because of false accusations about students who have claimed a teacher has done something when they haven't.To make sure that they don't get accused they r no longer aloud to do anything but talk to students and r not aloud to show they care in any other way.If I where you n you feel that his or her teacher did not do her job as a teacher then you can always call the principal n complain. But just remember that there job is to teach n nothing else.Good luck n merry x-mas and I hope your child is ok bye 4 now.

High school teachers are responsible for educating hundreds of different students each day. The majority of students do not want to be there. How many high school students care about their teachers? Why do high school students seem not to care about their futures?

Teachers are there to teach, not to care. The ones who should care are the students. The teachers get paid whether you learn or not.

I don't think that's true at all. All my teachers, whether I liked them or not, showed concern for me. I mean, would they go and chaperone all the dances and school functions that high schoolers have if they didn't? C'mon, they have better things to do on the weekend than that.

I've got a couple teachers this year that really care for me: one of them says that I brighten up his day just by walking into a room and another doesn't say much about it, but loves talking and joking with me because we're both into the same kind of dark humor.

I think you're just looking at it the wrong way: teachers do care about their students, they just show it differently (like by giving detentions to force you to learn promptness and things, or by grading you harshly to help you become a better student).

All teachers care for their students, otherwise they wouldn't be in teaching. Part of the job, as teachers, is to prepare their students for what lies ahead. High School teachers are trying to prepare their students for College and life beyond the sheltered environment of the school system. While their attitude may seem harsh or uncaring, they are trying to make things easier for their students in the future.

Well, I have to ask, what do you mean by care? What exactly are you looking for? High school is four years of learning to learn by yourself. They aren't there to spoon feed you education anymore, and it really is quite helpful because when you get out, whether you go to college or get a job in the real world, no one is going to cater to you there either.

I had several high school teachers that I would consider mentors. I know several now who very much care but are sick of the whining and puling that their students do about socialization, dances, clothes and allowances. Not much fun for them to listen to eh? Esp when their jobs depend on teenagers focusing long enough to pass a standardized test.

It depends. some teachers are just past the time when they should have retired. Others, such as myself, are just not "touchy-feely" types. I want to TEACH ENGLISH, not comfort a crying teenaged girl because the boy they met two days ago broke up with her or delve into the family life and find out crap like that - yes, I know - that's practically sacreligious these days, but in my opinion, guidance counselors are there for those things, I'm a TEACHER, not a mommy or a priest or a best friend. I love to joke around with my kids and have a really good rapport with almost every one of them, but on the first day of class, I'm VERY upfront with them - I tell them -"If you have a personal problem, go see the guidance counselor or an administrator because I'm just not equipped emotionally (or professionally) to deal with those kinds of problems." Most kids respect my candor. And, again, it's not that I don't LIKE them - I LOVE my kids. I just have limitations as to what I can deal with.

With all of the laws and restrictions on them teachers have to be careful or they can very easily lose a career they have spent many years studying to obtain. In my opinion our busy lives are to blame. We don't have time for parent teacher meetings. The classes are large. With all of the sex scandals who can you trust. Who do you know well enough to trust. When do you have the time to get to know the people around you. We pass laws to protect our children and our teachers obey them. It means they can't look the other way for a miner infraction. It means they can't make a mistake. I think we have put our children and our teachers in a very difficult place.
