Personally...I think the "Brand Names" like Playstation (tm) and others will still be around, but the technology, indeed, the nature of "video games" themselves, is in for a big change, an overhaul even.
Consider....games have already gotten as good in terms of graphics as they are ever going to get on Standard Definition Television. As in you need to have an HDTV to even *see* the difference between PS2 and PS3 graphics, and to a lesser extent, between XBox and XBox 360 graphics.
And, the trend at least with the arcades and with Nintendo's Wii system is to have games that more and more use your own *body* as a controller of choice, by way of wands (Wii) or dance pads (DDR and company).
So....*I'm* thinking that as the tech gets smaller and smaller, and people want to do more and more on a portable basis, that video games might give way to "augmented reality" games, where you act the game out real-world, *and* with game data superimposed over that somehow (display glasses and headphones?).
I know, it sounds like a lame retread of the "Virtual Reality" craze that hit before people could do polygons, but...Augmented Reality does have one *big* advantage.
You don't have to render the *background*, since that is the real world. This leaves lots more resources available for *game data* in the "foreground".
But yeah....I am really thinking the future of video games is being *hinted at* with MMORPGs like _World of Warcraft_, among others....not so much that the RPG bug is going to bite everyone, but.....
In the future, the games you play will be less of an *isolated endeavor* in front of the TV set, and more of a *lifestyle*.
Just saying, all in my humble opinion.
