The Sims 2 is the most amazing game I have ever played. The graphics are absolutely fantastic and it is so much better than the original because there is now a point to the game.
Of course, the expansion packs just enhance the game and make it so much better.

Civilization IV (4) is the perfect game for taking over the world, and therefore ranks top for me. But I have a close 2nd and 3rd, also.
SimCity 4 is a close 2nd for allowing quite realistic regional development, control, and management.
Then again, America's Army is good for restoring balance when the testosterone levels are a bit too high.

Impossible Mission (C64) -- Stay a while? Stay forever!
Elite series (C64) -- Defined space simulation and trade and was way ahead of it's time. Everytime I hear Greensleeves I still smile.
Speedball 2 (Amiga)
Supercars 2 (Amiga) --- and I do hope someone makes another!!
Powermonger (Amiga) -- One of the pioneers of God RTS games
Doom series (including Quake) (PC) -- it defined the FPS genre along with Wolfenstein
Warcraft / Starcraft series (PC) - opened up a lot of storyline to RTS games and paved a way for future copycats
Ultima series (PC) - knock holes open for the hack n slash genre and made its way into the MMO, now followed by the giants (World of Warcraft) of MMO.
Resident Evil 4 (PS2)
GTA series (PC - PS2)
Halo (Xbox) Say no more, open up my eyes to co-op playing
Splinter Cell (Xbox) Fun in the shadows
Gears of War (360) Splinter Cell on LSD

I think it has to be Warcraft 3 for its innovation to RTS and the development of the game engine that allows custom maps to be developed rapidly allowing for excellent gaming.
Wacraft 3 is still the best RTS game avaiable and it came out 3 years ago. That in itself is a testament to the brilliance of the game.

It depends on the genre of game you like and whether you have the power to run them.
My opinion is:
Shooter - Halflife 2/FEAR/Ghost recon: Advance warfighter
Online - World of Warcraft
RTS - medievil 2/Age Of Empires 3
