As an IT professional I have (of course) built my own PCs many many many times.

Perhaps I'm still not as good or knowledgable as some end users out there who claim that an assembled PC is defenitely the best choice ... why would that be ?

Is it because we home techies have more research & engineering capabilities & resources than any Fortune 500 PC manufacturer ... no, can't be that.

Is it because we home techies have more product or technical knowlegde than Fortune 500 PC manufacturer ... no, can't be that either.

It's because those who can build a PC themselves are not calculating time, labor, software & support when adding up the TOC (total cost of ownership) of the end product.

It's because many PCs on the market are composed of bargain brand components like low end sound & graphic cards that no one in their right mind would want in their PC.

It's beause many PC manufacturers have maintained a reputation for using "propietary" components that make finding replacement parts or upgrading difficult & expensive.

All that is true, HOWEVER, let me say this :

"The only computers I absolutely NEVER had and issues of any kind on were the high end (emphasis on HIGH END) models of compainies like HP. "

I used to believe that building your own was the best choice (for some people it may be), but after 20 years of owning & using over 50 different computers I am very confident in saying that (money aside) a high end unit from a repuable company like HP (no proprietary parts whatsoever) ids the best choice.

regards,
Philip
( get an HP dual-core Media Center PC ... you will thank me forever)

From a purchasing and support standpoint we're an IBM/Lenovo institution. I have access to reference sheets, maintance manuals, and parts information all from the web. If I have to send a PC or notebook in for service I normally get it back in 1-2 days. Their Thinkpads are made with extra framing and ABS plastic for stability and include a range of tools called the ThinkVantage Tools ot TVT. To me the best computer brand comes from the vendor that provides the best support. To this point we have been happy with IBM/Lenovo.

I'm not familiar with Dell or Gateway support. We use HP printers and their support is a little shaky at times. However with HP printers we find we can always order service manuals to service our own HP printers.

Dell or Gateway.
I bought a gateway back in 1996 and its still running today. Also bought a Dell in 2000, had some hardware problems early on which they replaced.. To date its still up and running win98 and no problems

The way to go is build you're own.
Theres a ton of research involved with building your own system but in the end its well worth it.

Some of the reseach would include what cpu. AMD or Intel.
Then what mobo, video card, memory, hard drive, powersupply.. things like that.

Best is to custom build your own computer, therefore you can somewhat manage your money..

if so, the best brand I'd say .. Dell.

I build my own but for the average user, I would buy an HP! They have an excellent recovery option that most PCs dont have! You can restore your PC to like new out of the box with the click of a key!

Apple. The consideration that the company puts into the design for consumers is impeccable, as well as weight (for notebooks), and the Operating System is fun, secure and easy to run.

I like HP support. Building one yourself has become a luxury not many can now afford. I checked the components for what I wanted and it would have cost me several thousand to do it myself.
