My husband got this job a year and a half ago. His boss has had trouble keeping people, so he did everthing he could to keep my husband working. He has gotten 4 raises, 4 huge bonuses, gift cards, lots of cash, all sorts of stuff. His boss came to our baby shower, they bought us an expensive highchair. His bosses wife and I had a kid at the same time. There are only 2 employees, including my husband. My husband goes kiting and is best friends with his boss.
Problem: My husbands dream is to run a resturaunt, his passion is cooking. His mother bought us a resturaunt out of state, its more money than we'd ever dreamed, he has to give his 30 days notice now.
His boss cannot just hire someone new. It takes months to train for this specialty. My husband will be screwing his boss big time to leave now. He could possibly go under. Should my hubby get drunk, or write a letter, or what???? How do you tell your friend you have no choice but to screw them and their family?? :(

Being upfront in an amicable way would solve the problem for both - your husband and his boss.
After all, your husband is pursuing his passion and dream!
I am sure the boss, if he is really awesome, would understand this and let him go.

The sooner you tell him the sooner his boss can work out a transition plan. Your husband could probably help locate and or train someone during the 30 days.

This would be a win - win situation, because your husband is opening up the door for someone elses opportunity and your boss gets someone new for cheaper pay.

Running a restaurant requires your husband to be there full time. It's truly a commitment to be there!

Good luck!

I think that if you and their family are as close as you say...then they should be happy for you. I would be completely honest with his boss and just tell him flat out. It's not like hes betraying him and switching companies...he's doing something that he has a passion for, and something that he has always wanted to do. The best thing to do is be honest. Sit him down, explain to him. Don't apologize, for he has done nothing wrong. You only live one time, and if this is his passion, then he has to go for it now. Or he never will.

You have to just come out and say it and be honest.

What he could do is offer to assist remotely for an extended period of time in training the other person. With all of the technological advances, perhaps he could telecommute or something to help train the other person.
