Actually, these kinds of math games were "invented" centuries ago by mathematicians in Europe.
Publication as a puzzle game in puzzle magazines was common in both Europe and the US at least 20 years ago.
A Japanese puzzle publisher began publishing them using the name Sudoku a few years ago and they became an ENORMOUS hit in Japan, and then throughout the world so they win the naming game

It was invented in Switzerland by Leonhard Euler in 1783.
The Japanese named it Sudoku based on a shortened version of the phrase "the numbers must be single" (SÅ«ji wa dokushin ni kagiru)

It only became popular after being marketed under that name in Japan, so that's the name that stuck. Magic square puzzles have actually been around for hundreds of years, longer even than the USA has existed.
