It's a trite fallacy to say that age is nothing but a number. Age is an ever-growing accumulation of experience that gradually shifts personal values and objectives away from those established at the outset of one's independent thinking stage, and this is accompanied by changes in the physical and mental ability of the individual. The saying is normally used to justify the difference in age in a couple, however that difference can often prove to be a timebomb waiting to detonate at some stage in the future - the bigger the age gap, the bigger the potential explosion. Anyone wishing to enter a serious, long-term relationship with a partner whose age is significantly different, needs to think long and hard about the consequences - not just how they will cope now, but in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years and so on. These consequences cover such matters as raising children, recreational activities, work/retirement, health/death.
