I have a Compaq computer which is fine and earlier this year I also had a Gateway laptop. I no longer have the gateway because it was too loud and you could say I spilled liquid on it. About four months ago I bought a Dell and now it is giving me trouble(I haven't spilled anything on it). I am about ready to just buy another laptop but this time I want something that is reliable and actually worth the money. Any suggestions?

I have owned four laptops in the past six years:
IBM ThinkPad
Toshiba Satellite
HP Pavillion
Gateway

All four were great, the first two I purchased used.
The IBM thinkpad was used heavily by myself and by kids/teens and has travelled via car, bus, plane and train all over the U.S. It finally died 3 years after I got it (it was about four years old at the time i bought it).

The Toshiba I got used, and is a sturdy and super little computer. My daughter has it and uses it a lot, for both college and personal use, as it's her only computer. I would not hesitate to recommend a Toshiba, new or used.

The HP I had for four years, and for the most part it was trouble free, the two problems I had with it however, turned out major: CD-writer, and eventually reader, failed, after two years. And internal part that plugs into the power cord fried, which ended its life.

The Gateway I have had for ten months, and have greatly enjoyed and have had no problems whatsoever with it. I am a power user, using it 12+ hours a day, heavy on graphics, and I am very pleased with it thus far.

If I was to look for another laptop right now, I would look for either Toshiba (new or used) or Gateway (new). I have considered Dell, but they seem overpriced to me.

BTW, I purchased my last two laptops at Circuit City and had no problem. When the first HP computer I bought died five days after purchase, they merely took it back and gave me another one.

I had a Dell for three years (I still owe $1,000) and the motherboard is failing so I wasn't sure I wanted to deal with them again. I ended up getting a Toshiba (which I love so far) but I heard good things about the Acer and the HP. Just don't buy anything from Circuit City. I had to return a defective laptop that I tried purchasing there (the Toshiba people told me too) and they charged me $300 in 're-stocking fees' because I didn't want to get a better model. They're crooks.

dells suck beyond definition, i probably wouldn't get a gateway either. my HP is pretty free of troubles, and toshiba makes some powerful, quality notebooks too.

I always go with Compaq when I'm not building my own. My compaq's have always been reliable and usually held up through anything.
