One can only hope that your dog will defend you in a time of need. Make sure that he loves you totally by treating him with the utmost respect and caring for him as best you can. Never mistreat him, always be kind and gentle, never hit him, and the respect that you receive in return will be worth it all.

No. A dog will not automatically defend you if you're in trouble. Just like people, dogs have very different personalities. Alot of dogs will, provided they have a bond with you. But no, not automatically.
As for labs, they are very good family dogs... in general. Like I said, they all have different personalities. Two important things you should know about labs:
They chew. Almost every lab gets bored and will chew. I work in a hardware store and 9 out of 10 times if someone comes in to buy a new hose because their dog chewed theirs up I will ask if it's a lab and they will say yes.
The other thing about labs, they stay in the puppy stage until they're usually 1 1/2 or 2 years old sometimes longer. So be prepared to have a full-size, full-grown dog with puppy energy and puppy mentality in your house for quite a while.

No, dogs will not "automatically" defend you. Some will, others will run & hide.
As a rule, the Labrador Retriever breed is very good with kids. But that doesn't mean that all Labs are good with kids. You need to watch your dog (regardless of the breed) when it's around children.
As for your particular pup, what is the Lab crossed with?

no, dogs will not automatically defend you. Additionally, it's getting more difficult to have dogs that will defend you because in some cases, a dog may misread the situation and 'defend' you against someone who is not an attacker.
A dog should not be used as a defense unless you and the dog are professionally trained. Other than that, try using other means to defend yourself.
Dogs can be good with children but make sure that from the very beginning you teach your dog boundaries and rules. The children also must have rules such as don't pull the dog's ears and don't take food from their mouth. By having everyone respect each other, you can co-exist better.

Labs are EXCELLENT dogs for family pets. I have a Lab mix myself and she is the most mild tempered sweet baby I could have ever asked for. I cant tell you that they will defend you always, but given a certain situation anything is possible. My dog is a very good watch dog and sounds vicious when someone rings the doorbell but is a big teddy bear when they come in so.... i think it would just depend on the dog.

I have a Golden Labrador..........he's really good with kids, and fits in anywhere. We got him 6days before christmas last year, and took him to relatives throughout christmas, he settles down and doesn't mind where he is - as long as he gets a fuss made of!
They do need a bit of walking/running etc and they're really playful. The only advice I can give you is be firm with him right from the start - you'll benefit in the long run!
And also check out this site......... http://www.canineconcepts.co.uk
About the defending bit.......... when we wrestle/play fight he just wants to play too, not viscious or anything - he really loves a fuss made over him.

I think that any type of dog could be good with kids it depends how they are treated but i think that a labrador is especially friendly. Dogs will defend their owners in situations because they feel that you are their family and will protect you from harm. It's a natural instinct

Not necessarially. A lot depends on the temperament, bond, & situation.
If you got a type A dog (doninate) yes. Types B & C are shy, timid or young dogs. If you have a choice and can pick from litter mates choose the one the suckles at the top of the teats.

Your pooch may be all lap dog in your hands, but even the gentlest canine can bite when facing a perceived danger. Defend against dog bites by learning how to reduce the risks.

Labs are known for being wonderful family dogs, if properly socialized and trained.

I had a lab once, and my family would act like we were hitting each-other, but he did nothing. He was really great with kids, but all dogs are different, you never know how they will act until given the chance. I also had a husky, and she would defend me against anything.
