It originated in Roman times B.C. It was brought back by Winston Churchill ,when the Allies beat the Axis as a
sign of peace.Also don't forget the 60's hippies ,they adopted it as a symbol for peace.

The "V" is meant to represent the female genitalia and thus means what it means. Conversely, the North American equivalent is the single finger and represents the male genitalia. I don't know why the continents differ in this respect.
